Michael J. Carey is an Associate in Selman Breitman’s Orange County office and is a member of the firm’s Toxic Tort/Environmental, General Liability, and Product Liability practice groups.  He represents national corporations in complex litigation matters, with a primary influence in toxic tort defense. His clients include contractors, distributors, manufacturers, premises owners and public entities in environmental disputes, including cases arising out of asbestos and benzene exposure. His clients also include automotive manufacturers, commercial construction companies and utility companies.  Prior to joining Selman Breitman, Michael spent nearly a decade representing his clients in a variety of civil matters including personal injury, product liability, public tort liability, professional malpractice, intellectual property matters, business disputes, and labor and employment disputes.

Michael's extensive experience in product liability provides him with a unique ability to evaluate complex tort claims involving numerous legal theories, as well as complex medical and scientific issues.  His years of representing both plaintiff and defense clients provides him with the valuable perspective to formulate and anticipate strategies on both sides of a civil action. He works closely with general counsel and claim representatives in analyzing various toxic tort claims to determine the validity thereof in order to best serve his clients' interests.

Clients benefit from his wide range of litigation skills, including managing all aspects of mediation, arbitration, motion practice, discovery, site inspections, settlement negotiations, and court appearances.  Michael served as second chair for two medical malpractice jury trials.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael  currently resides in Huntington Beach with his wife.  When not helping clients with their legal needs, he is involved with his local alumni and bar associations.  He also enjoys improving his culinary skills as an avid food lover.
